Questions and answers
Short answers to the questions people ask most: why a page did not change, how to turn Tintly off for a site, how to move your settings and what Tintly sends.
On this page
A page did not change
Click the Tintly icon. The line under the title says what Tintly does on this page. The usual reasons are:
- The page is already dark, and Tintly leaves it as it is. This is the right result.
- The page says that it supports one color scheme only. Tintly respects that unless you turn it off in Settings, General.
- The site is switched off, or you use Tintly only on chosen sites and this one is not chosen. See Control a single site.
- The browser keeps the page closed to extensions, such as the new tab page, the settings pages of the browser and the extension stores. Tintly cannot change those pages, and the window says so.
- The page asks Tintly to stay away. See Notes for site authors.
Turn Tintly off for one site
Open the site, click the Tintly icon and click the switch next to the address. Click it again to turn Tintly back on. Tintly remembers the choice. See Control a single site.
Use Tintly on some sites only
Click the Tintly icon and open the list above the address of the site. Choose Tintly only on sites I turn on. Then switch on the sites you want, one by one. See Control a single site.
A page looks wrong
Try another mode or another engine in the toolbar window, or turn Tintly off for that site. If that does not help, see Fix a page that looks wrong. It lists what to try in the order that usually works fastest, and how to write a small fix for one site.
The page flashes white before it turns dark
Show a quick dark version while the theme loads, so there is no white flash is on in Settings, General at first. If you turned it off, turn it on again. A very large page may show the quick version a little longer while Tintly colors the page.
A big page is slow
Choose the Filter or Filter+ engine in the toolbar window. They start at once and suit very large pages. See Pick an engine.
Pictures look dimmer or different
Tintly checks the pictures of a dark page. Dark logos and charts on a white background are inverted so you can see them. Very bright photos are dimmed a little. Square codes keep a white plate so that they can still be scanned. In Paper and E-ink the pictures follow the mode. You can choose how in Settings, Appearance.
What is the difference between Paper and E-ink?
Both give a calm page for reading. E-ink starts with no color. Paper keeps a little color and lowers the brightest white and the blue light. The Color setting changes this for both. See Read like on paper with E-ink mode.
Colors look the same to me
Choose a color vision filter in the toolbar window. See Tell colors apart with color vision correction.
Move my settings to another computer
Export your settings to a file in Settings, Backup and data, and import the file on the other computer. You can also sync with your browser account. See Back up, move and reset.
My settings do not sync
Open Settings, Backup and data. If a notice says that your settings are too large, remove some site rules or custom CSS. If a notice says that the sync data cannot be read, you can replace it with the settings of this computer. Every computer must have Tintly 1.1.0 or later. See Back up, move and reset.
Start again
Choose Reset all settings in Settings, Backup and data. See Back up, move and reset.
What does Tintly send?
Nothing about you. It has no account, no analytics and no remote settings. It downloads only the style sheets and pictures of the page you are on, so it can color them. Read the full text in Privacy and data and the list of permissions in Permissions and why Tintly asks.
Change the language
Choose the language in Settings, General. See Languages and right-to-left layout.
Ask for help
Open the menu with the three dots in the toolbar window and choose Help and guides. The About part of the settings has links to report a problem or suggest a feature.
