Selecting chats

Every way to pick chats: clicking, ranges, Select all, a title filter, the oldest N, and loading your whole history first.

On this page

Selecting happens in two places: the checkboxes in the site's sidebar, and the panel. This page covers both.

Start and finish selecting

Selecting is off until you turn it on. Nothing changes on the site before that. You have three ways to start:

  • Click the toolbar icon, then Start selecting chats .
  • Press Alt + Shift + B on a supported site.
  • Click the optional launcher button, if you turned it on in the settings .

When selecting starts, each chat in the sidebar gets a checkbox and the panel opens. To stop, click X in the panel (Finish and close), press the shortcut again, or click Finish selecting in the popup. Finishing removes every checkbox and forgets the selection.

Keep the chat list visible

The extension only sees chats that the page shows. If the sidebar is closed, the panel says No chats found yet. Open the chat list in the sidebar or scroll it, and they will appear here. Open the sidebar and the chats appear.

The panel

The panel floats over the page. It shows the site name, a big count of selected chats, and a line such as of 20 chats shown. That second number counts the chats that are currently in the page and not hidden.

  • Drag the panel by its title bar. It remembers where you left it.
  • Minimize shrinks it to the title bar and the count. The button then changes to Expand .
  • Panel settings (the sliders icon) opens a small box with the Add checkboxes as you scroll and Fast mode switches and an All settings link to the Options page.
  • Finish and close (the X) ends selecting.

Tick chats with clicks

Click the checkbox of a chat, or click anywhere on its row. Both tick it.

Rows do not open while you select

While selecting, a click on a chat row ticks it instead of opening the chat. This is on purpose, so you cannot open a chat by accident. The site's own buttons inside the row, such as its three-dot menu, still work. Click Finish selecting to get normal clicking back.

A ticked chat is highlighted. The selection survives when the site redraws its list.

Select a range with Shift-click

  1. Tick one chat.
  2. Hold Shift and click another chat, either its checkbox or its row.

Every chat shown between the two is ticked. Shift-click only ticks. It does not untick a range.

Select all, Clear and Invert

  • Select all. Ticks every chat that is shown.
  • Clear. Unticks everything.
  • Invert. Ticks the chats that are not ticked and unticks the ones that are, among the chats shown.

Select all and Invert work on the chats currently in the page. A long history is not all in the page. See Load all older chats below.

Select by title or position

Click Select by title or position to open two extra tools.

By title

Type part of a title in Part of a chat title, then click Select (or press Enter). Every shown chat whose title contains that text is ticked. Capital letters do not matter. The text is also compared with the chat's link. Click Unselect to untick the matching chats instead. A message such as 3 chats matched tells you how many were found.

By position: Oldest

Type a number in the Oldest box (1 to 500, default 10), then click Select or Unselect. The extension takes the last N chats in the list. The sites list newest chats first, so those are the oldest ones.

Load first, then pick the oldest

Oldest counts from the bottom of the chats that are in the page right now. If your history is not fully loaded, the bottom of the page is not your oldest chat. Click Load all older chats first.

Load all older chats

The sites load a chat list in pages as you scroll. Most of a long history is not in the page until you scroll down to it. Load all older chats does the scrolling for you.

  1. Click Load all older chats in the panel.
  2. The button shows progress, for example Loading chats… 140 (click to stop) . The sidebar scrolls to the bottom again and again until nothing new arrives.
  3. When it ends, a message such as 320 chats in the list appears. The sidebar goes back to where it was, and every loaded chat has a checkbox.

Click the button again at any time to stop. It scrolls only the chat list, never a conversation. The button is disabled until at least one chat is shown.

Checkboxes while you scroll

With Add checkboxes as you scroll on (the default), chats that the site loads while you scroll get checkboxes automatically. The extension also notices when the site replaces the whole sidebar. Turn the switch off in the panel settings, the popup or the Options page if you prefer to add checkboxes only when you start.

Selection tips

  • The count in the panel is the truth. Look at it before you press Delete .
  • Chats inside collapsed or hidden parts of the sidebar are not "shown". Select all skips them.
  • Only real clicks count. Clicks that a script on the site sends are ignored, so a page cannot build a selection for you.
  • Selection lives in the page. Reloading the tab loses it.
